AAA Washington has collected and redistributed over 1.6 million toiletry items to 78 different charities across Washington State and North Idaho. Each AAA Washington store location selects a charity within their own communities, so donations stay local.
AAA Washington launched the Soap for Hope initiative in 2008 to encourage its members and travel customers to donate unused toiletries acquired on trips. The program has grown over the years to include hygiene products of all sizes, such as soap and body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, shaving cream and razors, hairbrushes and combs for all ages and hair types, menstrual supplies, deodorant, hand sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes. The products can be of travel, regular or economy size and must be unopened and unused.
Anthony Ives, Executive Director for Kitsap Community Services had this to say about AAA Washington’s Soap for Hope Drive, “As Executive Director, I wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to AAA Washington for always being supportive of our clients whom we serve through the Soap for Hope campaign. Toiletries, soaps, and other supplies go directly to families in need.”
Many of the non-profit organizations have created a long-term, standing relationship with the stores and employees. Jesse’s Place at Camp Hope in Yakima was named after a AAA Washington employee’s grandson who briefly lived at the youth homeless shelter for a time after a bipolar diagnosis. Now, Jesse’s Place helps other homeless youth in the Yakima Valley that need medical, mental health, guidance, and an opportunity to obtain their GED.
